Born on 4th December 1907 [Leeds 9b:387] to Charles Anthony and Ethel Maude WARD (née JONES) of 19 Guildford Road, Levenshulme, Manchester, later of 45 Laureate Terrace, Newmarket.

1911 census...Aged 4, he was at 19 Guildford Road, Levenshulme, Manchester with his father Charles A WARD [30] builder; his mother Ethel [29]; brothers Frank S [7] and Charles E [5].

In the 1939 register Stephen was a stableman, at 45 Laureate Terrace, Exning Road, Newmarket with his father Charles A [8-6-1878] a carpenter, his mother Ethel M [3-1-1879, brother Frank S [27-4-1903] a stableman. Also there were widower Charles A JONES [10-12-1851] a retired chemist,( his grandfather ?) and Eleanor M JONES [10-4-1888] incapacitated teacher, his Aunt ?.



Being in the Engineers, Stephen could have been any number of places when he was killed, his records are not available. The 13th was the day that Obersturmfuhrer Michael Wittmann almost single handedly halted the British advance towards Caen at Villers Bocage, knocking out at least 12 Allied tanks plus a further dozen Allied vehicles with his Tiger tank,


Stephen is buried in Hermanville War Cemetery, France Ref- 1.N.20
and is also commemorated on the Exning Road plaque, now kept in the Exning Road Working Mens Club
